To mark National Waste Awareness Day (HPSN) 2025, the Environmental Agency of Deli Serdang Regency invites every part of society to work together for a clean and healthy environment. This year's theme, “Collaboration for a Clean Indonesia”, stresses how much sustainable waste management depends on everyone taking part.
The origin of HPSN
HPSN is observed every 21 February in remembrance of the disaster at the Leuwigajah final waste processing site in Cimahi, West Java, on 21 February 2005. More than 150 people died in the waste landslide, a reminder of how urgently waste must be managed effectively and safely.
Goals of HPSN 2025
The 2025 observance aims to:
- Strengthen the commitment of regional governments to effective and efficient waste management.
- Increase public participation towards zero emissions through separating waste at its source.
- Encourage producers and businesses to adopt green business practices by treating waste as raw material for a circular economy.
- Build a waste management value chain that involves every sector, from government and communities to industry.
Activities across Deli Serdang
The Environmental Agency of Deli Serdang Regency has prepared a series of activities for HPSN 2025, including:
- Village Clean-up Drives: Community work to clean village surroundings, involving village officials, residents, and local groups.
- Waste Management Outreach: Public education on the importance of separating waste at source and turning waste into products with economic value.
- Strengthening Waste Banks: Encouraging the creation and growth of waste banks in every sub-district as community-based waste management.
- Recycling Workshops: Skills training in turning waste into saleable goods such as handicrafts and compost.
